Abstract
O artigo propõe a intersecção entre sustentabilidade, ética, senciência animal e o papel emergente das tecnologias alimentares disruptivas, como as carnes, os leites, os ovos e as peles cultivadas em laboratório por meio da zootecnia celular. Parte-se do reconhecimento científico da senciência animal e da sua valoração ético-jurídica, que resulta em um alargamento da noção de sustentabilidade, para incluir padrões éticos. Apresenta-se a tecnologia da carne cultivada em laboratório (zootecnia celular), como alternativa para um novo padrão ético de sustentabilidade. Termina-se por tratar das variadas intersecções entre a zootecnia celular, Direito e sustentabilidade ética, para concluir que as instituições jurídicas têm papel fundamental na transição paradigmática para um mundo mais sustentável, em todos os sentidos.
Ethical sustainability and animal sentience
This article explores the intersection between sustainability, ethics, animal sentience, and the emerging role of disruptive food technologies, such as lab-grown meat, milk, eggs, and leather produced through cellular agriculture. It begins with the scientific recognition of animal sentience and its ethical-legal implications, leading to an expanded notion of sustainability that incorporates ethical standards. Lab-grown meat (cellular agriculture) is presented as an alternative for a new ethical paradigm of sustainability. The discussion then addresses the various intersections between cellular agriculture, law, and ethical sustainability, concluding that legal institutions play a crucial role in the paradigmatic shift toward a more sustainable world in every sense.
